A Word from the Founder:
Since I first began to cultivate ideas for a fun-f ocused
and customer service oriented paddle sport instructional and touring company
back in 1999, my idea for When It Rains has shifted focus many times taking
me through a diverse set of rapids.
I had the big picture in mind, but needed to slow down and focus on the
details that would help unlock the secrets of a successful business model.
Those important yet simple details finally came to me while on the water
paddling with a friend, “This is what I should be doing! I want others
to experience the thrill of navigating the water and reconnecting with the
natural world around them.” The peace that I felt in that moment is
still with me today.
Gavin Rains

A Word about the Founder:
Gavin has been teaching paddling skills privately since 1997 and became
certified in Whitewater Kayak Instruction, Open Water Coastal Kayak
Instruction, and Canoe Instruction by the American Canoe Association in
2001. He is trained in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. He is also a very
experienced wilderness guide leading trips all around the world, constantly
looking for new adventures.
The Company
When it Rains, Inc. was incorporated in January of 2008. Our mission is one
that focuses on providing quality, entertaining, and safe paddle sport
instructions and expeditions.

the full spectrum of instruction and touring adventures. We employ the only
ACA Certified

Coastal Kayak Instructor in the state of Alabama
and top notch instructors in all paddle sport disciplines. With our
knowledge, skills, and abilities we can help you achieve the precise level
you wish to reach in your paddling journey. Imagine maneuvering a vessel
through whitewater with confidence or just relaxing on the calm water
enjoying the serene newly discovered untouched natural environment. It
won’t happen overnight but with our instructional techniques and your drive
to succeed, you will be on your way. Through our own experiences we have
been able to compile the best and most effective instructional techniques
that will make a difference in your experience.

We consider your adventure to start at the moment you first contact us and
not end until you return home safe and sound. Once you sign up for a When it
Rains trip, you’ll receive a detailed list of every step you need to take
until your trip date and everything you need to bring. Our team will help
you with all your travel and hotel plans, finding any gear you might choose
to pick up beforehand, and with every other conceivable detail. We want your
experience to be one that is relaxing, worry-free and fun.

Our Environmental Responsibility
Even an environmentally compatible activity like running kayak tours can
affect the habitat in which it operates. As such, our tour operators have a
responsibility to conduct their adventures responsibly. When you travel
with When it Rains, your guides will follow practices that allow us to
observe wildlife as closely as possible within a predefined set of
limitation as to not disturb the wildlife.
